NOW GmbH was founded by the Federal Government, represented by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. The task of NOW involves the implementation of federal development programmes which besides the previous subjects of the National Innovation Programme Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology and battery-electric mobility from 2017 also include the programme implementation of recharging infrastructure for electric mobility and the continued development of the Mobility and Fuel Strategy.

 On behalf of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, NOW supports the export initiative in the area of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies as well as the German-Japanese cooperation in the power-to-gas area.
